Excerpt / Meta: We live on two wheels, but some corners of Tuscany are best seen on foot. Here is our favourite car-free hike from Lucca – and the trusted guide we choose to lead it.
Planning a car-free hike from Lucca is the ultimate way to experience the Tuscan countryside at a slower, more deliberate pace. We spend most of our days in the saddle, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. But every good holiday needs a change of rhythm, and some places are simply meant to be walked.
When our guests ask us how to spend a rest day off the bike, we always point them to the exact same route, and to the same person to walk it with: our friend and trusted hiking partner, Stefano Gabryel.
The walk follows the Nottolini Aqueduct, a line of more than 400 historic stone arches that runs straight out of Lucca toward the Pisan Mountains. Most visitors never find it, but we think it is one of the most beautiful half-day excursions in the entire area.

A Neoclassical Masterpiece in the Countryside
The aqueduct was designed in the early 1800s by the famous Lucchese architect Lorenzo Nottolini to bring fresh spring water from Monte Pisano directly into the city walls. What he left behind is a true masterpiece of Neoclassical engineering: a perfectly level arcade marching for roughly three kilometres across the plain, with the green hills at one end and the historic towers of Lucca at the other.
Walking alongside this monumental stone structure feels like exploring an outdoor museum. It blends beautifully into the surrounding rural landscape, offering a unique path that allows travellers to step back into regional history away from heavy traffic and standard tourist crowds.

Why We Love This Car-Free Hike From Lucca
The absolute best part of this itinerary, especially for those traveling light or prioritizing sustainable tourism, is the seamless logistics. The main path starts just a few minutes away from Lucca’s central train station, which means no car is needed at all to enjoy a peaceful day in nature.
The main trail is flat, easy underfoot, and well-shaded in many sections, making it absolutely perfect for:
-
Families with young children or strollers.
-
A gentle recovery day when your legs have earned a break after days of cycling.
-
Anyone wishing to experience a rural trail starting directly on foot from the city centre.
To plan your regional train connections or public transit hops across Tuscany, you can easily check official schedules online through Trenitalia or look into local bus networks via Autolinee Toscane.
The Parole d’Oro and Guided Excursions
Following the stone arches south, you eventually reach the Parole d’Oro (“Golden Words”), an elegant little temple-cistern at the foot of Monte Pisano where the pure spring water was once collected. It is an exceptionally quiet, green spot, filled with running water and old trees, barely twenty minutes from the bustling city.
You can absolutely complete this walk on your own. However, the reason we send our guests to Stefano is that he turns a pretty stroll into something much richer. He is a GAE-certified nature guide and a professional photographer who fills the route with deep historical context, local plant and wildlife facts, and the unique viewpoints most people walk straight past.
His small-group private guided hike along the aqueduct is exactly the kind of slow, expert-led experience we love to recommend alongside an outdoor holiday. If you want to jump back on two wheels after your walk, don’t forget to explore our updated guide to the best cycling routes in Tuscany to complete your travel planning.
